In an unprecedented move, the GMR Group, co-owners of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), have officially acquired Hampshire County Cricket. This acquisition makes GMR the first international company to take full control of a county cricket team. Through this takeover of Hampshire Sport & Leisure Holdings Limited, GMR now controls not only the Hampshire Cricket Club but also the Southern Brave team in The Hundred.
The deal, valued at £45 million, will be executed in phases over the next 24 months, with GMR initially securing 53% of the shares and the remaining 47% to be acquired later. GMR will also assume ownership of Hampshire’s iconic cricket ground, the Utilita Bowl, along with the adjacent Hilton Hotel and golf course. This acquisition will have far-reaching impacts, not just for Hampshire Cricket but also for GMR’s global sports ambitions.
