Australia has announced that Beau Webster will make his Test debut in the New Year’s Test against India at the SCG, replacing the out-of-form Mitchell Marsh in the playing XI. The decision comes as Marsh struggles to find form, with his last five innings failing to produce double-digit scores. Additionally, Marsh’s bowling impact has been limited, with just 33 overs bowled in the series, and he has been battling soreness since the Perth Test.
This is the only change to the Australian XI that claimed a decisive 2-1 lead in Melbourne, as Mitchell Starc has been cleared to play despite rib soreness during the Boxing Day Test.
Cummins on Marsh’s Replacement
Australian captain Pat Cummins addressed the change, stating: “Mitchy obviously hasn't quite got the runs and wickets this series. We felt like it was time for a freshen-up, and Beau’s been great. It’s a shame for Mitchy because we know how much he brings to the team, but now feels like a good time to give Beau a chance.”
Beau Webster: The Rising All-Rounder
Webster’s inclusion is based on his stellar performances in domestic cricket. Since March 2022, the Tasmanian all-rounder has averaged 57.1 with the bat in first-class cricket and picked up 81 wickets at an average of 31.7. In the 2022-23 Sheffield Shield season, he became the first player since Sir Garfield Sobers to score 900 runs and take 30 wickets in a single season.
Webster also impressed in the build-up to this series. He scored an unbeaten half-century for Australia A against India A in Mackay and delivered two three-wicket hauls in the second game in Melbourne. Cummins praised Webster’s readiness, stating: “Really excited for Beau; the first thing Mitchy said was, ‘I can’t wait to see Beau go out there and give it a crack.’”
